چکیده

We demonstrate polarization-insensitive non-return-to-zero (NRZ)-to-pulsewidth tunable return-to-zero (RZ) conversion based on a Raman amplifier (RA)-based pulse compressor and a fiber-based NRZ-to-RZ converter, which consists of a polarization diversity loop. We measure the bit-error rate (BER) characteristics of the input NRZ signal and the converted RZ signals. The power penalty of less than 0.2 dB between the converted RZ signals with different power ratios proved the polarization insensitivity. Moreover, by changing the Raman pump power of the RA-based pulse compressor, the pulsewidths of the converted RZ signals were flexibly tuned from 10 to 2 ps, which proved NRZto-RZ conversion with pulsewidth tunability. In all cases, clear eye diagrams were obtained. # 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Optical phase erasure and its application to format conversion through cascaded second-order processes in periodically poled lithium niobate.

We describe a new optical phase erasure characteristic of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) by using cascaded second-harmonic generation and difference-frequency generation with the signal set at the quasi-phase-matching wavelength. A simple analytical expression is derived clearly explaining the operation principle. It is interesting that the optical phase erasure feature enables an al...

Experimental observation of all-optical non-return-to-zero-to-return-to-zero format conversion based on cascaded second-order nonlinearity assisted by active mode-locking.

We report the experimental demonstration of all-optical format conversion by exploiting the cascaded second-harmonic generation and difference-frequency generation (cSHG/DFG) in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide assisted by the reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA)-based active mode-locking. 10 and 20 Gbit/s format conversions from non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to ret...

640 Gbit/s return-to-zero to non-return-to-zero format conversion based on optical linear spectral phase filtering.

We propose a novel approach for all-optical return-to-zero (RZ) to non-return-to-zero (NRZ) telecommunication data format conversion based on linear spectral phase manipulation of an RZ data signal. The operation principle is numerically analyzed and experimentally validated through successful format conversion of a 640 Gbit/s coherent RZ signal into the equivalent NRZ time-domain data using a ...

10 Gbit/s tunable dual-wavelength nonreturn-to-zero-to-return-to-zero data-format transformer based on a non-direct-current-biased fabry-perot laser diode.

We demonstrate the conversion of a nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)-formatted electrical data stream into a wavelength-tunable return-to-zero (RZ)-formatted optical pulse code by externally seeding a synchronously sinusoidal-modulated Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) with optical pseudorandom binary-sequence data at 10 Gbits/s (Gbps). The FPLD without a dc-biased current was modulated by use of a power-am...

Optical data transmission using periodic in-line all-optical format conversion.

We introduce a novel transmission technique of periodic in-line all-optical format conversion between return-to-zero and non-return-to-zero-like aimed at delaying the accumulation of format-specific impairments. A particular realization of this approach using in-line normal dispersion fibre-enhanced nonlinear optical loop mirrors at 40Gbit/s data rate is presented.
